Self-care and Emotional Support


My daddy used to say, "life isn't fair". We all know how true that is. So, if is important to practice self-care. It's not selfish, it's necessary. Self-care covers many facets, but today, I want to cover the mental and emotional side of self-care.

The battle with cancer is not just physical. The exhaustion that comes from dealing with it is undoubtedly mental. That can be just as exhausting as the surgery and chemo. If you have been through any major health event in your life, you understand this exhaustion.

It is so important to not just have the support of your doctors and nurses, but also your family and friends. You need to be able to go to those closest to you and receive emotional support of love, hope, and courage. Family [and friend] support is priceless.

Then there is the self-care that is simply doing something you enjoy. Take a long bath with lots of bubbles, treat yourself to your favorite meal, buy yourself an outfit or handbag, sit and read a book, hang out with your girlfriends, or whatever makes your heart sing. 

To be completely raw with you, the past few days have been difficult. Long after the reconstructive mastectomy, 10-week recovery and endless doctor's appointments that followed, it can still be a challenge. The scars, the pain, and the things that will never heal can come flooding in and bring tears to my eyes. It's not a daily occurrence, but it is an occasional one. Although I have an amazingly supportive husband who listened to and prayed for me, I still had to acknowledge my feelings and have a good cry. Then I began to focus on all the blessings in my life and sang worship songs. God has been so merciful to me. Then I had some "me time", watching movies and crocheting. #funfact - I love to sing.

Self-care isn't selfish
