The Value of Health

At 28, I was married with a 3-year-old and 6-month-old twins [all girls]. Fit, trim, and full of life, I played volleyball, enjoyed biweekly kickboxing classes, and leg pressed over 200 pounds. My health was not an issue in the least, nor, in retrospect, did I truly understand the value of health. The world was my oyster. Or so I thought.

Fast forward to 2017 when my world was turned upside down and I was reminded that tomorrow is not promised. It was Friday at 5pm when the phone rang. [On the other end] a doctor, whom I did not know, introduced himself and told me that I had breast cancer and to follow-up with my Oncologist on Monday since they were most likely closed. Speechless, panic set in.

A follow-up with my Oncologist revealed that I had ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a form of breast cancer, which required a lumpectomy. Surgery, recovery, and the cancer was a distant memory. Or was it?

Two years later (2019) during a routine examination, my Oncologist felt something and asked me to have some testing done. Three tests later, it was confirmed. The cancer had returned with a vengeance. After careful consideration, I opted for a reconstructive mastectomy, not wanting to risk a third bout with this vicious disease.

Even though it has been an extremely difficult road, I am so thankful that I did not have to travel it alone. With the loving support of my husband, our children and family, I got through it. They were [and still are] a priceless support to me. And I am forever indebted to the enormous team of medical professionals that I met along the way. Each one of them holds a special place in my heart. It is amazing how God places people in your life at precisely the right time.

This survivor has a new perspective on life. I am now on a wellness journey to eat healthier, lose weight, and take the best care of my body that I can. I will "Live for today, tomorrow is not promised".
