PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray
PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating
Two colors? Admittedly, this threw me for a loop. Pantone has always chosen one color of the year. From a design point of view, grey is a timeless classic and yellow is uplifting. Certainly, we have seen this combination in both the fashion and interior design worlds. The reasoning for the dual pantone color choice is beautifully explained by the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute:
"The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit."
~ Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute
I knew the Pantone Color of the Year selection process looked for new color influences requiring trend analysis. But did you know that it could include considerations like films in production, new artists, new technologies, popular travel destinations, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention? I certainly didn't. And there are many more potential considerations. You can read more about the process on the Pantone® website.
I'm feeling a tiny bit of pride since I chose a vibrant yellow for my office accent wall before the color was announced!
